Hey, San Francisco: We love you, we love you…not so much

Given the choice, in which US city would you most like to live, other than the one where you currently live? And also given the choice, which US city would make you say “pfft, no way I’d live there, I’m staying where I am”?

Those were just the questions (well, maybe I paraphrased a little bit) asked in a poll by TheBostonChannel.com.

Turns out that #5 on the list of “when can I move in?” is my beloved San Francisco. Tony Bennett wasn’t messing around; there are lots of reasons to love this place. Just a few of my favorites: the farmer’s market at the Ferry Building, the view pretty much any direction you look, and the fog (yes, indeed, I like the fog). We were #2 last year and have only been out of the top 5 once, in 2000, when we dropped to #6. I think we get it: you like SF, you really like SF!

On the flip side are the folks who’d rather take their hearts with them when the door hits them on the butt on their way out of town. While we’re #5 on the “yes, please” list, we’re also #8 on the “no thanks” list. That couldn’t have anything to do with our housing prices, could it? Or, perhaps, the fog that blankets the hills during the summer?

Topping both lists was New York City. The only other city to make both lists was Los Angeles. Love us or hate us, we probably aren’t in real trouble until everybody stops talking about us.

What about you? Which cities would you put on your lists?
