With construction slated to begin in 2012, the following are the planned phase 1 improvements that will result in a pretty major face lift for the park.
- Welcoming Entry Plaza, Path & Native Garden
- Elk Street Sidewalk Enhancement & Sussex Pedestrian Crossing
- Direct Canyon Access Trail
- New Tennis Courts
- New Larger Play area
- Park Acccessible bathroom and minor building repair.
I have to say that I’m really excited by the improved entry areas, right now it really feels unfriendly, particularly at the intersection of Elk and Bosworth.
In addition, there are planned improvements to the trails throughout the wilder sections of the park towards the north end of the canyon. Most of the trail improvements are aimed at maintaining the trails, making some of them easier to access, and connecting the trails in the canyon to wider hiking networks.
There will be a presentation of the plan to the RPD commission in the late summer of 2011. Assuming that all goes well at that presentation, they will have another community workshop in the fall of 2011, with a goal of finalizing design, creating construction drawings, and awarding the contract by spring of 2012 so that construction will begin in the Summer of 2012.
