Bernal Heights Winfield Street Slides

The Winfield Street slides of Bernal Heights were recently featured in the New York Times.Winfield street is a great little street on the northwest side of Bernal Heights that runs for several blocks from Coso to Cortland. I have had several clients live on or near Winfield street who would only consider moving within a 4 or 5 block radius, so strong was their love for the neighborhood and their neighbors in the area. If you want to live within walking distance to a BART stop, it is also one of the best parts of the neighborhood to be in.

The slides are located near the Esmeralda corridor on the map above, and I find it pretty hilarious to think of politicians like former Mayor Willie Brown or Senator Diane Feinstein sliding down them, although I can completely picture city supervisor Tom Ammiano (who has also done stand-up comedy) whooping it up on his way down the slides.

As I read the article, it sounded very much like a true Bernal story to me, in particular the level of neighborhood activism, as well as the diverse and colorful characters (the article mentions a circus co-founder, community activity, and sexologist) that either built or fought to keep the slides open when the city wanted to tear them down.

While you are in the neighborhood, I can also recommend Emmy’s spaghetti shack if you get hungry and need a filling bite to eat. So what are you waiting for? Find your kids (or a neighbors, or just yourself) and head on over to Bernal Heights to enjoy the great Winfield slides. While they might just look like two slides, at the end of the day the embody a lot of truths about San Francisco, from our love of fun to our tightly-knit neighborhood communities, and our love-hate relationship with city hall and government.

Koret Children’s Playground @ Golden Gate Park

Recently (2007) redone, Koret Children’s playground in Golden Gate park was, according to local legend, one of the first public playgrounds in the United States.

With two full play structures (one for the older playground set, one for the younger), spinner cups, a rope climbing web, cement slides (bring cardboard, these are a “left-over” from many years ago and probably would never be built today with current liability concerns. All that said, they are lots of fun), a water feature, toddler swings, regular swings, several locally-themed cement climbing structures (waves, crabs, sea turtles), and a little playhouse this playground might not have it all, but it sure does have a lot.

It can be busy after-school and on the weekends, so be sure to arrive mentally prepared for swarms of children. The play area is surrounded by several nice grassy areas that can be great for a picnic, somersaults, or just playing in the grass. Immediately to the west is the Carrousel, with a current admission price of $2 (kids five and under are free). Hours for the carrousel vary, so be sure to check ahead.

West Portal Playground

West Portal Playground is perched above the West Portal Muni stop, where the K, L, and M lines enter the underground system.

It’s got some nice playstructures for younger kids (bigger than toddler), and also has a nice and (for San Francisco, relatively) level grass field which is great for soccer, frisbee, catch, or whatever free-form sport you are inspired to play.

There is a community building and restrooms at the playground, as well as several picnic tables.

Weather: We were there on a perfect day, but it can be a bit cloudy on this part of town. Unless it is a spectacular day, I’d suggest you bring a light jacket (or two)!

Playgrounds of SF: Lincoln Park Playground

Located at 33rd Ave. and Clement in the Richmond district, the Lincoln Park Playground is a sweet spot to play. Bathrooms are nearby in the clubhouse for the golf course (not sure about weekend hours, but it wasn’t a problem on a weekday afternoon).

If you live in the neighborhood or are in the area, it is a great playground. But there isn’t anything so amazing about it that I would drive across town just to hang out here!

It has plenty to offer, including:

  • Bathrooms
  • 2 major play structures
  • Swings (toddler size)
  • 2 big kid swings
  • Merry go round with cone-shaped rope climbing play area
  • Picnic Tables
  • Grassy area for rolling down the hill, sitting on a blanket, or just watching the clouds go by

Playgrounds of SF: Julius Kahn

The Julius Kahn playground is nestled at the south end of the Presidio, easily accessible via car from either the Arguello or Presidio gates. We’ve been to many school picnics and a few birthday parties here. It is a great playground since it offers something for kids of nearly every age. Parking can be a little tricky on busy days, but it usually not to much of a problem. I’m a big fan of the saucer swings (although they look like they could really hurt if you got hit by one accidentally).

It has plenty to offer, including:

  • Soccer fields
  • Tennis courts
  • Community building
  • Bathrooms
  • Baseball diamond
  • 2 major play structures
  • Swings (toddler size)
  • 2 saucer swings
  • Monkey bars and climbing structure
  • Merry go round with cone-shaped rope climbing play area
  • Golden Gate bridge views
  • Water feature

Playgrounds of San Francisco: Panhandle Playground

Yesterday, after my open house my family went on a bike ride to one of the many great playgrounds in San Francisco.

To be honest, given the bad rap that SF has for raising kids, I’ve always been a bit surprised at how good the playgrounds are. In addition, because most of us in SF live in smaller houses – with smaller yards – than our friends out in the burbs, the playgrounds are usually a pretty happening place.

This particular playground is in the panhandle of Golden Gate park, and while the play structure has a plaque with some official sounding name on it, most folks just refer to it as the Panhandle Playground. It has swings (both the seated infant and regular kind), a great tire swing, 3 small slides, 1 corkscrew slide, and a few other balance and climbing structures. It is probably best for the 3-5 set, with 5-7 year olds being a little underwhelmed with the activities (other than the tire swing, which can be fun and dangerous at any age!).

Below are a few photos:

And here is the location:
