Discover Russian Hill

Named for the discovery of a small Russian graveyard found at the top of the hill in the 1800’s, the graveyard is long gone from Russian Hill but the name has proved enduring.

Homes in Russian Hill aren’t far from the world famous Lombard Street, which is a part of the neighborhood (although the crookedest street in San Francisco is actually in Potrero Hill). The Alice Marble tennis courts and Ina Coolbrith park are two neighborhood spots that offer an amazing opportunity to enjoy the view while you get your sport on.

The famed “Tales of the City” series by Armistead Maupin were inspired by Macondry Lane on Russian Hill, and tourists regularly flock their to have their pictures taken. Russian Hill is also home to many restaurants and great shopping opportunities.

Public transit to the neighborhood is provided by several muni bus lines, and the cable cars meander through the neighborhood, but if BART or muni trains are your primary mode of transport, you’ll have to decide if the walk to those stations is worth the neighborhood views and reputation. The hills will provide plenty of juice for leg workouts if you decide to make walking or biking a part of your regular commute or exercise routine.

Hyde street and Polk street both offer a mix of shopping and dining opportunities for denizens of the district.

The area is also home to the prestigious San Francisco Art Institute, a world-renowned school for art that is also home to several Diego Rivera murals.
